Chroma’s August Calendar of Free Outdoor Events in Cambridge
Fall is coming, and although we all relish Cambridge’s colorful autumns, we’ll still be bummed when summer has officially closed its doors. That’s why we’re making the most of the few remaining weeks of heat with a bucket list of free outdoor events. Whether you’re seeking delicious food and drink, movie screenings or live music, the most crucial thing is getting outside and soaking up every last glorious drop of summer. Luckily, we’re here to help guide you through the waning days of the season with Chroma’s August Calendar of Free Outdoor Events in Cambridge.
EAT and DRINK
Every Thursday night this August from 5:30-8:30, take advantage of the final four “Under the Hops” events at Hyatt Regency Cambridge. Experiment with seasonal craft beer tastings, innovative cocktails, artisanal pizza and other delectable small bite items on an open-air patio overlooking the Boston skyline and Charles River. If you’ve got a thirst for knowledge (and alcohol), hit up the second floor terrace from 6-7 to participate in an enlightening beer, wine or cocktail tasting. Pick your poison or be ambitious by attending each of the following remaining educational sessions:
-August 6th: Tequila, Education and Tasting
-August 13th: Sauvignon Blanc tasting, California vs. New Zealand
-August 20th: Bourbon, Education and Tasting
-August 27th: Pinot Noir tasting, New World vs. Old World
WATCH and LISTEN
There’s a plethora of amazing movie & music events happening close to Chroma, but we’ve selected a few of our favorites to help narrow down your list.
-August 4th: You can’t beat free music playing to a summer sunset. From 6-7:30, join Passim at the Danehy Park Concert Series featuring The Wiles. To get to Danehy Park via pub trans, catch the #74 or #78 bus from Harvard Square or the #83 from Central Square.
-August 6th: The East Cambridge Business Association Movie Night presents childhood throwback Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in the East Cambridge Savings Bank parking lot (292 Cambridge St.) beginning at 7pm. Plus, you can catch the one-man bluegrass/country band that is Eric Royer. Royer will wow you with his 5-string banjo, dobro, harmonica, vocals and kazoo skills…all at the same time.
-August 11th: The Sinclair in Harvard Square’s Free Rooftop Movie Series heats up with America’s fave summer romance, Dirty Dancing. Doors open at 8pm with the movie kicking off a half hour later, but space is limited so we recommend arriving early. To top it off, you’ll enjoy an a la carte, movie-themed menu from Chef Keenan Langlois and drink specials from the new Club Car Bar.
-August 13th: The tunes of Elton John will fill the air as Kendall Square Association Movie Night takes us on a nostalgic journey with a screening of Disney’s The Lion King on the Volpe NTS Center Lawn (55 Broadway; 7 pm). As an added bonus, you’ll also be able to get your salsa on to the Latin sounds of The Boogaloo Collective, led by percussionist Yahuba Torres.
-August 20th: Inman Square Business Association presents can’t-miss American Adventure classic The Goonies in the East Cambridge Savings Bank parking lot (1310 Cambridge St.) and will feature a performance by Jungle Jim’s Pirate Balloon Extravaganza. The fun all kicks off at 7pm sharp. – Lauren Boitano
